Why are there gap fees?
We are a private clinic with no additional funding from the government or corporates.
Medicare is an Australian public health insurance scheme. It provides a rebate to you when you access an eligible health service. The Medicare rebate was initially set at 75% to 85% of the scheduled fee on inception, with the patient paying the remaining 15% to 25% gap, or the clinic absorbing the gap cost by bulk billing.
Medicare funding has been indexed lower than the inflation rate for decades, resulting in increasing gaps being absorbed by bulk billing. You may have noticed that with bulk billing clinics, the appointments have been getting shorter and rushed (“shrinkflation”) to make up for this.
If you would like to be seen on time and be able to book a decent amount of time with your doctor of choice, a gap fee is the only sustainable way of providing this service.
